As a military-affiliated student, Hannah Schield ’19 has lived in three states and attended four colleges over the past five years in her pursuit to obtain a degree. Her hard work will come to fruition when Schield receives her business administration degree with a concentration in supply chain management from the Cameron School of Business.

"Once the requirements of my degree are completed, what ultimately matters are not the courses listed on my transcript, but the sensibilities and habits of mind that I bring to my work, friends, family, and indeed, the rest of my life,” said Schield.
According to Schield, who is CSB’s “Outstanding Graduate” for the school of business and within the supply chain program, the knowledge she has gained during her studies brings immense value to organizations.
“It allows us as students to have the tools and ability to be successful in a competitive market,” said Schield, who is among the first cohort of graduates from the David S. Congdon School of Supply Chain, Business Analytics, and Information Systems.

In February 2020, Schield will apply those tools in her role as an area manager with Amazon in Virginia. Before starting her job, she will attend the Student Veterans of America National Conference in Los Angeles, the largest annual gathering of student veterans, advocates, thought-leaders, stakeholders and supporters in higher education. Schield serves as the secretary for the UNCW Student Veterans’ Organization.

“It was important for me to get involved in the SVO to gain a sense of community that was still military-affiliated but one that was outside my partner’s work,” said Shield, whose partner is active duty military. “It was a way for me to add value and bring a different perspective. Throughout my time on the executive board, and by spending countless hours in the Military Resource Lounge, I have had the privilege of befriending numerous veterans, spouses and dependents from all walks of life.”

Now that she can check off obtaining a degree from her to-do list, Schield’s next goal is to read one book a month over the next year.

“As an adult, this hobby has become too distant and one I would like to resurface,” she said. “Learning does not end after graduation, and I wish to remain curious, even in the small mundane things.”
